Why do some gas stations and mini-marts charge like ##Question_Title##.45 cents if you use a card for anything? ?

I've noticed this in a very wealthy area and kind of poor area..dont know if that has something to do with it.

  1. They get charged by the bank for every single credit card transaction they have.  Their own merchant services charges them, as well as your bank or credit card company.  So, they are passing on a fraction (less than a 1/4th) of the cost to the consumer.

    They way most places figure it is an average.

    Say they got charged an average of 10$ with an average of 20 transactions.  That means each transaction cost them 50 cents.  Its on a much higher scale than that, and the actual average cost is usually about 1-3 dollars give or take, but thats what it is.

    With the price of everything going up, companies are looking for ways to get more money out of the consumer, and thats one of them.  Before they used to absorb these fees, now they cant afford to.
