Why do some grocery stores waste bags?

Grocery stores like Raleys or Belair (same thing i guess) always stuff their bags with like three items and then get another bag even though there might be a ton of room left in the other bags. They also put milk cartons in their own bags and put soap and cleaning stuff in their own bags too. We even asked once if the employee who was bagging our stuff could put as much stuff as possible in a few bags so we wouldn't waste any. She took the items out of a few bags to stuff them in the other bags and then just threw the unused bags away. Which is very pointless since we were trying not to waste them. Incidents like these have happened often. I'm not trying to complain, I'm just curious why the grocery stores waste bags.

Most do it so they can charge out of this world prices for the "extra" convenience. Although I don't know what stores you're talking about (probably because I'm Canadian) but there are some high end stores like that in Canada. They tell employees to do that because they'd like to keep their customers satisfied to come back. If you don't like how they bag you're groceries, then simply ask them to fill the bag as much as possible or to bag it yourself.

I've heard its because most places train their employees to keep some products seperate like bleach or a harsh soap away from your fruit. But sometimes they go a little overboard--last time shopped and used plastic bags i bought 5 items and came home with 5 bags! It was nuts! So i bought some GREAT bags from greensaks.com and use them all the time. Its so nice to not have to figure out what to do with the mountains of plastic bags that I am left with!

Because they dont care about the environment. I like shopping at pak'n'save because you have to buy the plastic bags, and at the end of the counters there is a big bench of used boxes of which you use to stack youre shopping. Its also cheap.

These are uneducated people. The best thing for you to do would be to use reusable shopping bags made out of cloth every time you go grocery shopping, that way you won't be using any plastic bags at all.

come to australia and then have a look around at the little towns for example Timboon it is plastic bag free since 1995.

um i work at grocery store and try to put as much stuff in a bag but the bags are so cheap management doesnt care and plus managment rather u put less things in a bag because if the bag breaks and the items break and they lose more money. last atleast my manger gets upset wen we stuff the bags
