Why do some lightning bugs flash and others fade in and out?

Are some males and some females? Or are they different species? Or does one firefly do both at different times? There are both kinds in my backyard.

yeah. the ones that look green are male. the yellow flash is femlae. The fade and flashes are mating signs/calls.

Thay are different because the ones that flash are females and the ones that fade are male. No they are not different species and they do not do bothe at different times.
