Why do some motherboards come with one RAM slot and some other motherboards come with 2 or 4 RAM slots ?

i see that some motherboards come with only 1 RAM slot,

and some other motherboard come with 2 RAM slots or even 4 RAM slots,

do newer motherboards come with more RAM slots than older motherboards ?

and why do motherboards have 2 or more RAM slots ?

and what is SIMM and DIMM?

whats tha difference?

does it have to di with anything above?

please explain me everything

  1. I have never seen one with only one slot, and Ive been working on computers since before the pentium one. I was born in 86, but I started when I was about 10 so I had a pretty good head start.

    The reason they come with different numbers of slots is purely for the cost of making them. Its far cheaper to make a chipset that only supports two chips, and its cheaper to make a board with only two slots.

    Most modern boards have 4 to 6 slots, mostly because there is a greater demand for ram, and the fastest pieces of ram are too expensive in capacities of over 1gb, so the high end boards have more slots so you can still get a good amount of capacity using reasonably priced ram.
