in my daughter's play class some lady calls her daughter pet and sis.

It's a term of endearment which I associate with the North East of England (Newcastle/ Tyneside), where lots of people call each other 'pet', including complete strangers - women to men, men to women, women to women, not usually men to men though.

Other regions in Great Britain have other traditional expressions, e.g. 'love' (Yorkshire), 'my duck' (can't remember exactly where!), 'my lover' (West Country), 'hen' (Scotland, I think), 'nipper' (used for any young person, in Hampshire/ Isle of Wight).

Oh my, I never heard of that. Not sure why though. Probably because they love their kids and it's a funny nickname?

I don't know. It's sounds loving and gentle to me, though.

I call mine really weird made up stuff. Like "bubzy" and "cocotono" and "bafoli." Trust me, I have no idea why i call them such weird names. In fact, I called my oldest "bubzy" the other day and said, "I'm cocotono! Sis is Bubzy!"

Because they adore their kids.

Because they love pets as much as they love their kids. Thats why they treat both (kitten and kids) equally!
