Question:

Why do some people act like hurricanes are harmless?

30 years ago, I remember a hurricane heading toward Long Island, and people directly in its path on Fire Island throwing hurricane parties instead of evacuating. Luckily, the hurricane turned away and they all lived. Today I turned on the TV to see a wind surfer in Florida being blown up into the air and smashed into a building, currently in critical condition. Luckily, he lived.

What goes on in the minds of people who want to go out and have fun in hurricanes?

  1. Typically hurricanes are not as dramatic as the media makes them out to be. I lived in Florida for 10 years and every hurricane season people headed out to the beach. I probably would not recommend wind surfing but I would sit on the beach and watch the big waves hit the shore. The way the sky and the ocean looks before a hurricane hits is AMAZING. It's really beautiful.

Now if it's a category 4 or 5 hurricane that's something to be concerned about! I would be home boarding up my windows and stocking up on water. In most cases though, all it does is blows all of the c**p out of the air, cools the temperature down (which is usually about 90 degrees), and gets rid of humidity (which is usually about 90%). I looked forward to hurricane season because of that.

It's not like an earthquake. It's predictable and you can prepare for it so most of the time they are not devastating. Besides what else are you going to do with a whole day off work?!

  2. Probably because theyve never been in one. Its hard to imagine how powerful something like wind and rain can get if youve never experienced one.

  3. people are stupid dude
