Why do some people act like they're the center of the universe?

I noticed this is common in average people as well as famous ones. People think too much of themselves and think they're the center of the universe. Sometimes I wonder if its peoples way of justifying or finding meaning in their existence.

  1. I think it is postmodernism our zeitgeist - A phase we are going through when faced with the concept of relative truths.

Another  factor is that In the uk we are now in many ways in the hands of thatchers babes the me-first yuppies.

Hopefully we will grow out of it - it isn't pretty and isn't universal and we got through all our other stages - this time though maybe the basic human mind cannot take in the enormity of global warming and possible collapse of our species etc. Yes I imagine we retreat back to what is most solid. In many ways this stage resembles a war zone where 'normal' values are put on hold.

  2. Maybe it's because they've somehow either, not cared about anyone elses perspective, thought up a logic as to why someone elses  shouldn't matter, emotionally become tired from other peoples perspective, or many other reasons. Either way, I think it's naive to act and think as if today's thoughts are never going to change and therefore act like it's fact..(especially when we attach that state of mind to our personality). It leaves little room for apology.

  3. Its very childish...children by nature think they are the center of the universe but they grow out of it..some dont I guess.  I htink they know their not but as long as people around them play into it, feed it, enable it, they will continue to act that way.  Very aggravating, I agree.

  4. It's because some of us are.

Why can't all you average people accept that?

I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I would be if it wasn't for my modesty.

  5. Because some of them ARE indeed the centre of their own universes. They live a tiny little corner of the real universe where they are the centre of what they see as the universe and everything seems to revolve around them; they choose not to notice what's going on outside this little world and when they are faced with it, the explain it based on the assumption that it too orbits around them.

I think there's a name for them, they are called "self-centred". The reason they see that is basically ignorance - they don't know that there is a world outside of their petty existence and they don't know that, just as they tend to think of themselves so do others so in reality, not many people think of them!! You are also right, part of it is probably a way of justifying their existence.

p.s. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "average people", for the people around me, I don't find it so "average", most people around me tend to understand that the world is much larger than they are; but then maybe I just like to hang with out such people.

  6. I can't imagine why other people act and feel like that, when it is obvious that I am the center of the universe!

  7. I agree, that people think too much, insteaded of watching. That's the problem of such people, they reflect them selfs in everything. They creat there opinion too fast and do not see all factors, which must lead to the right answer. The same approche remains in relation to people. They do not accept the people so as they are, seeing just enough to understand there superiority. They have no compassion.

I think, that all people go through this stage. Selfdiscipline and compation may help to go further and understanding of there finiteness.
