I am one of those people.I am not really supposed to drink much alcohol as I have heart trouble, but still like to have the odd glass of wine . I find that if I dilute it by drinking water too, I don't get so thirsty & don't wake with a dry mouth next day.& this really works -promise !!!

Water is much better for you than wine and quenches your thirst whereas alcohol will dehydrate you so if you are going to drink wine or any alcohol, it is much better for you to drink at least equal quantities of water with the alcohol, taking it in turns to drink one then the other.

Wine isn't thirst-quenching - water is.  Water is also a good palate cleanser.....Wine is just an enhancement to the food

Hydration.

Alcohol dehydrates you body. Drink water in-between or with alcohol consumption reduces the dehydration and limits the effects of hangovers.

EDIT:

Why would you want to cleanse your palate? You are using the wine to enhance and accent the flavor of your meal. Cleansing your palate would prevent this. If you were at a wine sampling, water for cleansing would be completely appropriate... but not during a meal when you are only drinking one.

Wine has a lot of congeners, which causes hangovers. So the only way to prevent it, is to drink a lot of water.

it helps cleanse the palate and if you are thirsty you would not want to drink a lot of wine at one time to quench your thirst....

For some reason wine will make you thirsty for water, even if your not eating dinner!  Sometimes after I have had a couple of glasses of wine even when I get home I want some water!  Wine seems like it will make you need hydration !  Hope this helps !!  Cheers !!!
