Question:

Why do some people believe Global Warming isn't true?

I've heard several theories on this.

1) The government is lying to us. But republicans initially stated that global warming was a myth and now are saying that its true. So what is more likely: The government being wrong and correcting itself or the government being right and incorrecting itself?

2) The sun is creating more heat and mars is also heating up so it cannot be true.

3) God promised that there wouldn't be another flood (I can't believe that this is even an argument)

Despite the evidence of the ice caps melting and polar bears dying, the exponential increase of gases since the industrial revolution, and every other evidence that supports it, why not believe its true?

For argument's sake, even if global warming wasn't true why be opposed to it? Tons of companies are now saving billions of gallons of water in becoming green. The effects of trying to prevent or reduce global warming only produces better benefits for nature and ultimately future generations.

  1. There are extremely few scientists who doubt the warming of the earth as a consequence of greenhouse gases, primarily CO2.  And even amongst this small group, they generally concede that global warming exists, yet they are not convinced that this will have practical consequences or that it may not result in significant harm.  Again, the majority of scientists do not share this view and there is a consensus that global warming is, without dispute, a major problem, caused primarily by the emission of CO2 in industry and the destruction of the rain forests which would otherwise consume the CO2 in the air.

  2. People usually think about their usual daily lives. They do not suspect that this will affect them at all. Some people who were not affected by the deaths of a relative during the Iraq war don't really care. Then some day some random guy named Al Gore explains this crazy theory of polar ice caps melting and dead polar bears. If people do no see this with their own eyes, they won't believe anything. Their minds can't project this image to  see the carbon dioxide being trapped in the atmosphere. If it will not affect them, they will not believe it.

  3. Companies are going green because it is the popular thing to do.  It's more expensive too, so prices are shooting up.  Not that going green isn't a good thing, because it is.

Global Warming isn't real, at least, not man made.  The brief warming period we've been having is due to the sun, and it's natural (look up the medieval warming period and mini-ice age which followed).  The globe goes in a cycle of warming and cooling.  At one point, the Earth was too hot to support life.  At one point, the Earth was a giant ice planet.  Both were millions upon millions of years ago, but they're both true.

This Friday, April 25th, it is forcasted to SNOW again.  I don't remember it ever snowing this late in the Spring.  This year (both winter and spring) have been colder than many years past, and scientists are saying we're back to temperatures seen in the 1930's.

    It's a cycle.

  4. I dont know why people dont believe global warming. I believe in global warming, but not in the way that you do. I believe that global warming is a natural cycle and it will correct itself. There is nothing we can do. Just give it time.

  5. because some people don't want to change, some don't want to believe that we are causing this massive problem, some just want to continue driving their SUV's and leave the lights on and just be conservative and ignorant

  6. Those who are in positions to make change and create the consciousness that global warming is real to their communities, families, and nations choose not to for obvious reasons in my opinion.  For example, the U.S. houses the most notorious polluting practices and have housed them for the longest time.  The reason other "developing nations are even attempting to catch up to the U.S. is that it is considered necessary because they don't have the resources and wealth to do so. WE must remember that we have the wealth and influence to bring change in respect to how we view and take action to global warming.   Remember that we are not signed onto the kyoto, or montreal protocol, which directly addresses global warming and reducing it's effects worldwide by well over 100 participating countries.

I guess we just really need strong leaders that are willing to get ourselves on board as a nation.

  7. The problem is not going green. The problem is we are losing rights and giving our freedoms away to remedy a problem that was fabricated to take power from people. We have our hands tied to so badly by these green nutjobs that we are basically at the mercy of the world. We can't drill for our own oil, we can't refine it, it's extremely expensive because we have to put tons of additives in it to meet EPA, etc.

Furthermore by increasing the population and reducing greenhouse gases namely CO2 you are killing the food supply. HELLO... MORE CO2 MORE FOOD....Plants thrive on CO2. Did anyone ever think the earth was so cleverly designed that it was made to increase CO2 to compensate for a larger population consuming food grown out of the earth?

By the way, you need to check your icecaps again... they are there and growing. Global temps are dropping... That's not my opinion, That's hard scientific fact... How many record winters do you greenies need to go through before you get it in your head that you've been duped. just like the people freaking out about global cooling in the 70's

  8. I believe in Global Warming, I just don"t believe in Al Gore's reasoning behind it. It's not our falt! Like you said their are other planets in our universe that are also heating up. So if their is no aliens driving SUV's on these other planets. Al Gore's Nobel prize winning platform sucks. Sucks the money right out of your pockets.

  9. Global warming is true, and so is global cooling.  It's all part of nature.  Once you learn the natural sciences you will understand more.

Polar bears are increasing in number and the antarctic is increasing in mass.

Just because Gore wins awards for a movie that's been proven to be 95% lies, doesn't mean you have to believe what he wants you to believe.

Think for yourself and educate yourself.  You'd be surprised how much it helps.

  10. Try doing some real study on the sun

    Little Ice Age

—A period of long, severe winters in Europe that occurred roughly between 1300 and 1715, corresponding closely to a period of erratic solar activity.

    Maunder minimum

—A period between 1645 and 1715 when the solar activity cycle operated at a greatly reduced level.

  11. 4) The possibilities are so terrifying they won't let themselves accept the concept.  It's pretty depressing on the face of it, unless you chose to empower yourself by becoming informed and working to reduce your ecological footprint.

But this site is not representative of the real world.  In reality, universities are deeply involved in research programs and producing the next generation of climate scientists.  In reality, most nations are finally making strides in formulating programs that at least begin to affect change.

Lies by members of the current administration are part of it.  So is the inexact nature of science and modeling.  My sister is a Christian and in denial about global climate change, and pretty much attributes her beliefs to science/scientists/natural phenonenon.  I've been researching the topic for an article, and will be ready to discuss (I almost said confront!) the topic with her after I've finished my research and written the piece.  It's for a volunteer newsletter that serves naturalists, and my article is intended to inform and offer enough information and sources that the reader can make his or her own determination, and do their own research.

And that's one reason I ask and answer questions in this category.  To keep the discussion  -- the debate -- going, in hopes that some will do enough research to finally accept the current and future realities of global warming.

  12. i believe in global warning, but my friend believes it is a natural cycle that will correct itself, thats why he's a noob

  13. because they are afraid of reality

  14. Because people are stupid, they believe what they want to believe.

  15. Some just don't want to do anything others see some statistics like how it was cooling from 1945-1970's or that the ocean is the largest producer of C02.

  16. No one denies the existence of global warming, they deny the existence of a greenhouse effect.  The reason they deny this is because there is plenty of evidence to show that man made carbon dioxide emissions have nothing to do with the increasing temperature.  I refer you to the link I provide.

The reason to oppose it if it isn't true is to keep a focus on actual issues.  There are plenty of other environmental issues that need to be addressed but are ignored since the greenhouse effect political platform commands everyones attention.

  17. You can fool all the people some of the time....

  18. Because some people can think for themselves.

  19. Because some people don't open their eyes and think, but instead they think their backyard is the world

  20. First of all ,your facts are slightly (completely) wrong.

The ice caps have been melting now for aver 10,000 years. Who cares if thy melt some more. The rate of ice melt has remained consistent throughout this century.

Polar bears ARE NOT dying. They are enjoying the warmth, drinking cokes,  and reproducing much like their small but dangerous counter part, the rabbit. 25,000 polar bears now versus 5,000 in the 70's (do the math).

There is not an exponential increase in gases (do you know what that means). In 1960, it was about 305. Today it is around 380, and increases by about 4% per year.

As for the going green, going green by implementing biofuels has caused a drastic price hike in foods and gas. Riots have broken out in poorer countries because families can not afford to feed themselves. If you were them, would you really care if people wanted you to change to a new light bulb?

Also, if the planned taxes are implemented, prepare to pay for it.

A good general article written by highly regarded scientist.

  21. No offense sweet cheeks, but I think you should research things a little bit more. Go see both sides and how much there is to support each side.

  22. Because it's a natural cycle that has occurred throughout recorded history. That's history that supporters don't want to aknowledge.
