Why do some people have such a hard time understanding that we share a common ancestor with chimps and NOT that we evolved from chimps?

Because Creationism is based on faith, not fact. So you can't really win, except by not playing the game!

Because unlike many scientists who have devoted their lifetime to learning, the religious people who ask these over-simplified & redundant questions, which they have often just heard from friends, and perhaps given evolution maybe 5 minutes of thought, in their entire life, then probably got tired, and had to go get something to eat, never returned to think about the subject any more deeply than that, and then just assumed that evolution was too difficult of a subject to understand, so it would be easier to just attack it!!!

I think some are too scared to admit that there's a higher power so the easiest thing to do is just go along with what they've heard from scientist on T.V & what people around them believe

Good point. Every Saturday, I like to get jazzed up on coffee and go to Y/A. And there's a continuous stream of the human and chimp questions. I don't even respond to 'em anymore. When ever there's info available to anyone that seeks it, it often filters down as misinformation when it doesn't come directly from the source.

I think this is because they simply do not understand that humans are in fact a branch of the great apes that are bipedal. Most likely they never understood the term "primate" to encompass everything from lemurs to humans.  I also suspect many of those asking the question are very young with little or no education in the field of biology.

I think it is because they have been brainwashed by non scientific ideas, like religion.
