Each of us lives in two worlds simultaneously, the Public and the Private.  Often, it results in a schizophrenic character embodying the same personality.  Personality, as we all know, is quite plastic, flexible.  And as such is quite malleable to social and environmental influences.  Indeed, the individual is overwhelmed with myriad of stimuli daily.  Whether it is advertisements for foot powder or gun powder, each such stimuli requires that the organism either accept or reject its influence (social status, in any and all groups, is determined by Action Opportunities, Performance Outputs, and the acceptance or rejection of influence (Berger, et al)).  Thus, it is quite astounding that the organism can function at all given such an unrelenting sensory attack.  So, the organism adapts (to achieve the goal of survival) and compartmentalizes the stimuli.  First into broad, easily observed categories, then followed by a more discreet and discriminatory file structure. This file structure forms the basic value level of the organism, the belief or world view if you will.  And all of his or her responses, that have proven effective and have assisted in achieving the goal of survival, have been integrated into the system as normative behaviors.

The personality is very similar to the directory tree on a computer.  Very structured and very ordered.  But, as we are all aware, any one file may be corrupted (by outside influences, by over use, or as a result of simple failure).  The answer therefore appears to be, People lead double lives as sort of a defense mechanism to maintain homeostasis, i.e., balance.
