Question:

Why do *some* people let religion govern their lives?

I am Roman Catholic but in no way do I let it take control of my life. Sure I believe in God etc... But I don't strictly go by what the bible says. I think we should be able to choose (so long as it's good).

  1. Interesting, It is a fantastic Feeling letting God into your life.

i don' t have any regret regarding it. None i just wish i never left and discovered 'The World' in the way i did. (drink and lax behaviour)

  2. I let my religion govern my life, to every possible extent. Then again, I'd find it very tough not to follow the Life Lights. They are, after all, very easy to keep to, yet also hugely affect day-to-day life in a big way. Being able to choose, so long as it's good, is pretty much a theme throughout my religion, though the rules are all-governing strict. The whole point of the Life Lights is that you can do absolutely anything you want, as long as you do not breach the 3 points (or if you have to breach them, follow them in order as they are written. What comes first in order, should also come first in priority).

However, I share your feeling that a very big handful (God's hand?) of Christians can be very well over the top about how they conduct life through religion. Some of us can't even breathe without invoking the wrath of the Christian God, so it doesn't exactly help when we have radicals who remind us of that every second of the day. With a great deal of relish, it seems.

    ((((hugs))))

  3. "I am Roman Catholic but in no way do I let it take control of my life. "

so you dont let the vatican dictate your views on contraception and s*x outside of wedlock then?  lol ok

  4. Well, then you are not Roman Catholic, you are Protestant. Meaning you "protest" the faith.

You misunderstand what following God is about and have made a religion that suits you. That makes make you feel satisfied, doesn't cramp your style, and allows you to change your beliefs to fit the moment, that's not Roman Catholicism, that's secularism. Secularism is exactly what the Pope said "threatens the Church today."

In seeking and loving God, hopefully you'll find that you want to do his will and not your own. That your sin offends you because it offends him. Putting yourself and your desires first is not following God and has no remote resemblance to Catholicism.

  5. Guidance in making choice is important.

The Bible tells us what God's definition of the good is.

It is hard to make appropriate choices in a vacuum.

  6. The Universe (GOD) gave you free will - Religion does its best to remove it...

Have you noticed how the BORG  in Star Trek all speak as if they were in a Religious Mass "We are the Borg, we will add your distinctiveness to our own" - Just like Religion (FLOCK = DRONES).

  7. God has created us and given us mind to think

  8. Given that we all in theory have the free will to think I personally would just let them get on with it..

If religion is what they think makes them happy then leave them to it..

As a very lapsed Catholic I would too.

  9. They do not understand that God, not religion, should rule their lives. God and religious are not the same.

  10. Typical.

If a father tells his daughter not to play in the shed, and she decides she knows better and plays in the shed anyway, how can she say she respects her father? And having totally ignored him and broken the rules, how can she then say "But I should be able to chose so long as what I do is good"?

Breaking the rules is not good.

It's not for you to decide what is good and what is bad, it's for you to learn and understand the rules and comply with them. This is the most fundamental, intrinsic element of religion.

Those who let religion "govern" their lives are, in fact, the only truly religious people on earth. They alone respect their God, and demonstrate that by complying with His will in it's known entirety. You don't catch them cherry picking at it - abiding by what suits them and ignoring what doesn't.

Those who "bend" the rules, or decide they know better, are just flakes.

You'd do better to join us atheistic heathens.

At least we don't pretend to believe in and love God and all the rest of it then just run around doing whatever we like regardless of how much it must pi$$ the boss off.

    Toytheists.

The biggest bunch of hypocrites on earth.

  11. I let Jesus take control of my life. I've put him in charge, so he is in the driving seat. I still have free will and can choose to say no. But I love Him so want Him to guide my life. Being a Christian and Catholic teaches me about how to live and helps me worship God. Knowing Jesus and knowing about religion is not the same!

  12. Babe God doesn't believe in you.
