Question:

Why do some people not believe in global warming?

It's proven. The effects are showing (melting ice caps, stronger sun rays etc).

Theres absolutley no reason not to believe it exists. If you don't, or know anyone who doesn't believe in global warming, please explain why.

Looks like you have you eyes open. Can’t say that about to many people in society today. Most of us walk around with blinders until a catastrophe hits, then we wake up pretty quick. Unfortunately we go blind again a few months later…

Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.

Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

  2. Umm, maybe because volcanoes expel more CO2 than any/all of our exhaust systems...

And volcanoes are 100 percent natural...

    Hmm...

  3. Global warming exists, BUT ... the amount is somewhat exaggerated. We have seen a rise in temperature of about 0.6° C (1° F) over the past century or so. It is nothing that hasn’t happened before though, as the earth has repeatedly gone through warming and cooling cycles for as long as we know. While most people understand this natural cycling, there are those who insist that *this time* it is caused by humans; although any human contributions to the effects that drive climate change are very small.

Your mention of increased solar activity is well noted:

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/...

And while we may be losing some Arctic ice, the Antarctic ice is actually growing:

  4. Global warming is not the same thing as human caused global warming.  The left pretends that it is.  Global warming is meaningless unless a time scale is provided.  For example, we are cooler than we were 100,000,000 years ago and warmer than 10,000 years ago.  We may be cooler than we were 10 years ago and warmer than a year ago.   Ice caps have melted before.  In the 1930s, the melting was similar to today.

  5. Global Warming should not be used in the same sentence with belief.  This is a warning to anyone that once something becomes so politicised that it seems more like a religion and no one can think rationally on any issue.

I feel as many scientists feel through study that the earth warms and cools all the time and that human's C02 output has little effect either way on what the earth's temperature will be.

  6. The only way to find out if global warming is true and happening as we speek...is to basically study both sides. Don't decide it's true and take that side only because that side says it is and throws a couple of supposed facts at you . The answers are there, you just have to look for them.

Gosh, I really can't stand it when people take a side and have not yet weighed out BOTH arguments... what ever the case may be.

If it's so important  to you, then study it!

  7. Can you believe in a weather phenomenon? No instead one believes in the science that either supports or does not support the theory.

Do I believe in the SCIENCE of GW, yes!

  8. Of course it exists; the question is how much of it is natural and how much is caused by human activity. I believe most of it is natural.

  9. yep, and there is no reason to believe god exists either...

And global warming doesnt cause stronger sun rays...  its the other way around.

People dont believe in global warming because there is just as much evidence that shows that natural cycles like this occur all the time, whether we are here or not.  This leads many to believe that the carbon we are adding to the atmosphere isnt effecting the earth as much as they think it is.  After news article after news article of c**p that doesnt make sense, like " global warming may be the cause of higher humidity", or  "amazon to dry up", a lot of people are just too smart to get sucked in by it.  The people who write the articles that the masses read DONT EVEN understand what the scientists have reported, so why do people like YOU think they know more about the subject than the people who dont believe in AGW?  All you did was read some articles, I read a couple lengthy books that put many topics into perspective, and now I have no reason to believe an increase from .003% to .004% in co2 will cause mass destruction of society everywhere.  You have to understand that there are far too many unknowns for any computers to be able to predict the future.  So why should americans stop using oil if the rest of the world wont?  You and I both know that the producers will not stop producing.  So when we stop using oil, the developing nations will be able to get it cheaper, and it will help their society in many ways.  But look at the Net equation here...  Our economy goes in the crapper, everyone else does a little better, and the gasoline is still being burnt, possibly at even faster rates because there are lower standards in developing nations.

P.S. richard, how do they measure the amount of co2 seeping from the worlds volcanos?  THEY CANT.  Just like they cant come up with a global average temperature.  Seriously, how do they do it?  Also, how do they come up with the average co2 level of the world?  It has to be higher at the sources, so how do you not know they havent purposely been taking co2 readings in the middle of cities?  Or, at the top of mauna loa... a volcano that seeps co2...

  10. Andrew - did you actually read the link you provided? Here is the part you may have missed...

"Comparison of CO2 emissions from volcanoes vs. human activities.

Scientists have calculated that volcanoes emit between about 130-230 million tonnes (145-255 million tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (Gerlach, 1999, 1991). This estimate includes both subaerial and submarine volcanoes, about in equal amounts. Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006) - The reference gives the amount of released carbon (C), rather than CO2, through 2003.]. Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)"

Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes

Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes

Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes

Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes

Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes

Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes

Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes

Shapeshifter - maybe you should read the article too. Please, if your theory is so great, publish it, because I'm sure scientists researching climate change haven't thought of that yet. Until then I'll listen the the SCIENTISTS at the USGS, NAS, NASA, NOAA and the IPCC.

  11. If you look at the real info it suggest it is not a real problem.

  12. Did you know the Earth' core is molten Magma?

Do you know how hot it is a few miles beneath us?

Do you know how thin the lithosphere is under the oceans?

Maybe you could look at this web page - and learn?

    http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/vwlessons/...

"The 'Crust' is virtually thin as the peel of an apple in comparison to the earth's diameter."

What scientists are just beginning to discover = the number of volcanoes under the earth's oceans (70+% of the surface).

Thousand of new volcanoes revealed beneath the waves:

"The team estimates that in total there could be about 3 million submarine volcanoes"

    http://environment.newscientist.com/arti...

Now - Should we find out exactly how much heat and CO2 the  oceans can release? ? ? ?

Or - should we remain uneducated?
