ignorance or fear. We are afraid of things that may be different or things we don't understand. I have mental illness and I understand those things but before I was dx, when I saw a person like that, I would "run" because I was afraid. Media portrays them as dangerous, stupid, etc and I was scared.. Some people choose not to understand but for the most part I think they are just scared of the unknown..they don't know what to expect
