Why do some people pass out when they put in new contacts. for like the first time?

I've seen this happen a handful of times in the offices I've worked. There are nerve endings on the surface of the eye that send a signal to the brain when they are depleted of oxygen which makes some people pass out. It usually only happens the first time but it can be scary in the moment.

Huh!  It happened to me the very first time I got contacts when I was 13 - 20 years ago.  Never happened again.  I had no idea it was common.
