Question:

Why do some people push the door further open when I'm already holding it open for them?

Like a lot of people, as I go thru a door, I'll hold it open for anyone else who might be about to go thru it. Sometimes they don't thank me, no big deal. But for some reason, what irks me is when the person pushes on the door when I already have it open about as far as it can go! Why do some people do that?

  1. Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I usually do that as a gesture of gratitude. The person was nice enough to hold it open for me, so I hold it open once I'm going through so that they can go on their merry way.

Or sometimes I'll hold it open as I'm going through it so that I can hold it open for the next person when I walk through.

Either way, I doubt it's a rejection of your gesture of kindness. If that happens, just smile and let go of the door when they're got a hold of it! :)

  2. I don't think it's intentional. I think it's out of habit. Sometimes i do it without even realizing it!

  3. cookiesmom said it..... a lot of times i'll grab the door because of that, i don't want the door to hit either of us on the way out or in.  also, while it is a nice gesture, sometimes i feel weird when someone goes WAYYY out of their way to hold the door open for me.  i'm not anyone special, so i grab the door in those situations as well.

  4. Try this instead. Look them in the eyes, smile at them and open the door for them. I don't know about you but it worked for me. If you're on the same side of the door, then just say "Allow me".

  5. They're just rude!!

  6. Out of habit. I'm used to opening doors for myself, I see a door, my instinct is to open it. If someone does it first I feel kinda creepy inside, since I haven't finished the act I was subconsciously planning.

  7. Let go of the door as soon as the other person is touching it.

  8. its not that they are pushing it further open....they are just taking the door from you so you can let go of it without it hitting either you on the way out or them on the way in.....its actually a courtesy to you

  9. Because trust has to be earned my friend!

They simply don't trust that a stranger is helping. Sad I know but in today's society completely understandable.

And as for those who don't thank your kind act...a loud throat clearing or a loud and clear "a thank you would do" from you ought to teach the pigs some manners.
