Why do some people see science as a religion, what is their argument?

  1. I'd call that a meaningless oversimplification.  Those more eloquent might say they choose science as their ultimate source for truth.  If honest, they would limit that to truth about the physical universe.  They would recognize that science discusses how the universe works, but doesn't address why, and doesn't cover anything outside of the known physical universe.

    If you accuse someone of having science as their religion, you are likely accusing them of claiming that nothing exists besides the physical universe.  Science doesn't say that.


  2. They have no considered argument. I think they are just projecting their religious uncertainties onto science.

  3. Science, unlike religion, is a sole purpose for life. It is for some, what gives life meaning.  It is the "understanding" of how the universe and nature works, that's all.  It is an interpretation of the patterns in nature and in the working of living systems.

    Those that cannot achieve these kinds of conscious understanding, depends on their gods to provide the answers describing the unknowns.  They depend on their gods to protect them and to justify their lives.

    The differences between the meaning of science and religion is significant, in my opinion.
