Why do some people strive to be different?

I have seen some people on here who say lines like... I'm not African American..I'm African. Do they feel like there any better if they say that//?.

We are all insecure to some degree my brotha... but some of us are more insecure than others. Some of that is learned behavior and some of it is artificially introduced to us.

And I think a lot of people who are African don't appreciate being identified as American.

Although we are all different from one another, the trend of tattoos and piercings seem to be this generation's method of attracting attention.  They wind up all looking scary and stupid - and the same.  I think many people don't like getting lost in the crowd and go for some weird thing to help them stand out - but in a verrry wrong way.

They aren't striving to be different. Culturally, African-Americans and people from Africa are nothing alike. I know this from experience.  African-American culture is Southeastern culture, and I share that with them.  Totally unrelated ways of life.

Well no point in getting upset.. Ive been preaching this message for years..Immigrants regardless of race tend to be anti-American..I think we've done all we can do to reach out to African immigrants..It really leaves us no choice but to embrace our AMERICAN heritage only because its safer for us in the long run...

Well... maybe some people don't want to be associated with America. I mean... it has great opportunities, but it's amazing how many people come here and hate this country because of pride for their homeland.
