Why do some people talk with a somewhat heavy accent, but sing perfectly showing no signs of an accent at all?I've always been curious about this.An example is Bjork. Watch videos of her interviews, and then listen to her music.

  1. Because when people sing you have to make the notes sound pleasing without any accent or dipthongs such as i=long i, a=long a, e=long e, etc.  Now that's not always true, but usually that is why.

  2. Hi there.  Great Question!!!   I have been wondering that, myself.   ONe of my NEW and favorite groups is Celtic Thunder.  The five singers in the group are all from Ireland and when they speak,  you can hardly understand a word they are saying with that strong Irish brogue.  When they sing...  not a hint of it and it makes you almost want to say they are faking the Irish accent.  Of course, they aren't, but it is amazing to hear the contrast.    You have gotten good answers so far and I will continue to watch to see what everyone says.

  3. accents are mostly caused by the placements of the sounds in your mouth

when singing correctly, the placement of the sounds is the same in everyone. This is why no matter what you sound like usually country musicians sound the same and usually the "emo" or pop-punk musicians sound the same.

when singing opera or a more artsy way of singing, the placement is always to the front of the mouth and the sound is supposed to be rich - giving off an english-type accent no matter what your normal accent is
