  1. It is a falsehood that opening your windows will save your house from being destroyed during a tornado.

Back in the 50's and 60's I remember my family members saying to open all the windows during a tornado warning. The pressure is very low in and close to the vortex.

But science has proven that the homes are destroyed by the cross winds that can be in excess of 150mph during an E4 tornado. The first damage is usually as the wind hits the side of the home and lifts up the roof at the overhang. Then with the roof gone the wind will just fill the home and cause it to shatter and fall over in the direction of the wind.

  2. During certain types of storms, the atmospheric pressure outside your house may drop suddenly.  People are afraid that the higher pressure in the house may cause the windows to blow out.  If there's a tornado outside your house, though, you have a lot more to worry about than a few broken windows.

  3. Probably because they figure if the conditions in and out the house are the same less damage will occur. Maybe they think glass will break and hurt you if you have them closed. I honestly don't know but these are some theories.

  4. so that they don't blow/break inn during a storm:)

  5. Because their grandmas told them it was.

    Unfortunately, Grandma was wrong.

  6. people do this especially w/ a tornado, because if they don't the pressure in the house is so hi that it would pretty much in a "crude" vocab: explode
