It stands for "to unite by a league".

It is part of this country's heritage......You can't take it away.

Just because someone doesn't like it doesn't mean it should be gone.

In the Civil War, it was war between geographical sections or political factions of the same nation......

You have the Civil War. the war between the North (the union)and the Sout (the confederacy) in the US from 1861-1865

The North had their Union flag flying, and the South had their confederacy flag flying........

So what don't I understand about it offending someone?

Educate me..........

  1. Some people practice what bigotry they can.

The flag means many things to many people.

Arrogant, ignorant people have identified it as "racist".

    They're bigots.

Just as cross burning (a Scot's tradition) has nothing to do with racism.  (It's staking a claim, a statement of land ownership.)

We've destroyed a huge part of our culture (literature, plays, movies, comedy and dance) simply because it is deemed "racist" by these bigots.

And yet. . . an African American Mime (a BLACK in WHITEFACE) doesn't seem to ruffle a feather.

  2. I think people have a problem with what the South stood for in the Civil War.  Since it was the symbol the South decided to use........so Americans today take it to be a sign of prejudice against Blacks and the support of slavery.

  3. Beacuse a lot of racist white people hang it up as a sign they don't like other races.

  4. Some folks think it's racist, but the real problem is that it shows disloyalty to the United States.

  5. Because the south lost the war and its seen as a rebellion and it is highly unpatriotic because it basically means you dont recognize the current federal government as yours. Also the confederacy was the one authorizing slavery and had very different political goals.

Its kind of like waving an al qaeda flag around, exept its less bad.

  6. You are absolutely right! It is a part of our heritage and part of the American legacy.

But, those who flew that flag, were committing treason, and did NOT even want to be part of the USA ! Why would we want to celebrate that.

We remember it . but we should not fly it.

Just like we remember slavery and all of the struggles of civil rights, but we do not still post up "white only" signs in front of water fountains.

We remember our history, but not all of it is worth celebrating.
