  1. For us Christians there are now only two commandments:

Mat 22:36  Master, which [is] the great commandment in the law?

Mat 22:37  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38  This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39  And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 22:40  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

  2. This is but one of the 613 mizvots given to God's chosen people, the Jews. Biblically, six differing law codes were given by HaShem, G-d, to Moses, at Mount Sinai:

        * The Ten Commandments.

        * The Covenant Code follows, and provides more detailed laws.

        * The Ritual Decalogue, roughly summarising the Covenant Code, is presented after a brief narrative describing the design for the Ark of the Covenant and Tabernacle.

        * The Priestly Code, containing extensive laws concerning rituals and more general situations is given from above the mercy seat in the Tabernacle, once the Ark and Tabernacle have been completed. This code is extended further when events occur not quite covered by the law, causing Moses to ask Yahweh for greater clarification.

        * The Holiness Code is contained within the Priestly Code, close to the end, but is a distinct subsection placing particular emphasis on things which are holy, and which should be done to honour the holy. It also contains the warnings from Yahweh about what will occur if the laws are not followed, as well as promises for the event that the laws are followed.

        * The Deuteronomic Code is remembered by Moses, in his last speeches before death, both covering the ground of prior codes, but also further laws not recorded earlier, which Moses has, by this point, remembered.

With Christ's death, burial, ressurection and ascension the dispensation of the Mosaic Law changed and Christ ushered in the dispensation of Grace. The day of worship for Christians became Sunday in honor and recognition of His resurrection on what is believed to be Sunday.

According to the apostle Paul in Romans 14:5 One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. 8 If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

There is nothing written in the Bible that Christians must observe the same Sabbath as the Jews. The word sabbath or Shabbat means day of rest, nothing more and nothing less.

  3. For those who are Spirit filled, every day is the Sabbath day.

Jesus said that if you Love God with all your heart, mind, body and soul...  and love your neighbor as yourself, you ARE keeping all of the commandments.

  4. Christ is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. There is no change in the clear words of the Holy Bible. Tedi Lee  is correct, but not one word or dot will be change or deleted from the Law... ALL THE LAW. If you break the least of these and teach others to do so, (according to the false teachings of so called teachers of the Word, the Sabbath or Friday sunset to Saturday sunset is the least of these) you are in danger of breaking all of them and coming to judgement.

Don't let anyone fool you. They are the blind leading the blind.

  5. It doesn't matter which day believers choose to meet together now.  We are BLESSED to have a nation which decided to have a 7th day, which the nation observes as a day OFF, a day to rest. THANK GOD for that. Can you imagine if this nation just made you work seven days a week?

Anyway, there is no more days anymore that are more sacred than others.   Jesus IS our Sabbath rest.  We rest from our Labors of trying to keep the law to "save ourselves"  in Him.

Hbr 4:3   For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Hbr 4:10   For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his.

Hbr 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Mat 11:29   Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

  6. In Rom. 10:4: “Christ is the end of the Law, so that everyone exercising faith may have righteousness.” (Sabbath keeping was a part of that Law. God used Christ to bring that Law to its end. Our having a righteous standing with God depends on faith in Christ, not on keeping a weekly sabbath.) (Also Galatians 4:9-11; Ephesians 2:13-16)

I am looking for the verse that would support how you understand sabbath nowadays.

However, I think you are pertaining to Hebrews 4:8-11 which says: "8 For if Joshua had led them into a place of rest, [God] would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 So there remains a sabbath resting for the people of God. 10 For the man that has entered into [God’s] rest has also himself rested from his own works, just as God did from his own. 11 Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest, for fear anyone should fall in the same pattern of disobedience."

From what are Christians here urged to rest? From their “own works.” What works? Works by means of which they formerly sought to prove themselves righteous. No longer do they believe that they can earn God’s approval and gain eternal life by complying with certain rules and observances. That was the error of faithless Jews who, by ‘seeking to establish their own righteousness, did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.’ (Rom. 10:3) True Christians recognize that all of us were born sinners and that it is only by faith in the sacrifice of Christ that anyone can have a righteous standing with God. They endeavor to take to heart and apply all the teachings of God’s Son. They humbly accept counsel and reproof from God’s Word. This does not mean that they think they can earn God’s approval in this way; instead, what they do is an expression of their love and faith. By such a course of life they avoid the “pattern of disobedience” of the Jewish nation.

The “seventh day,” referred to in Genesis 2:2, was not merely a 24-hour day. Similarly, the “sabbath resting” that true Christians share is not limited to a 24-hour day. By exercising faith and obeying the Bible’s counsel, they can enjoy it every day, and especially will they do so in God’s new system.

    I hope I answered your question.  =)

To Blessed (Trust God Not Man) -

which "talk" are you pertaining?  Public Talk (one of our meetings)?  It is also commonly called Public Discourse.  One of the meanings of Sermon is Discourse.  But one of its meanings also is moralistic rebuke.  There are countries, like in where I live, view sermon as a rebuke and not a discourse.  This is not a WT explanation, only my observation. (see word web).

Regarding how JWs view your curiosity...I hope you are not making sweeping statement.. =)

  7. Surely Tedi Lee has it correct.

As far as the Sabbath is concerned.

The evidence found in the New Testament suggests that the early Christians, who were mainly of Jewish decent, meet on the first day of the week.

It is probable that this was because Jesus rose on the First Day of the week and this also avoided unnecessary conflict with the non Christian Jews in the society in which they lived.

Gentile Christians continued this practice as a memorial and as a convenience.

The Command found in the Law given to Moses was annulled when Jesus fulfilled that Law and change the “do not” in the law into “you will” in the Beatitudes which cover all the Ten Commandments except the one concerning the Sabbath.

It is as well to remember that the meeting together of the Christian Ecclesia’s was to fulfil the instruction given by Jesus –

    Matthew 26:26-30,

Luke 22:16-20 and the instruction to the Apostle Paul found in

    1 Corinthians 11:23-29

    Additional Comment:

It is a great pity that gatita_63109 thinks more of the commandments of men, than the the commandments of Jesus found only in the New Testament.

  8. It's a good question.  I wonder this, too.  I've heard some arguments for both sides, but I still am in favor of keeping the Saturday sabbath holy.

However, I tend to lean towards the legalistic side because of my upbringing.  So I recognize that I can easily put too much emphasis on "the details."   I can't force other Christians to abide by the Sabbath, or convince my pastor to hold services on Saturday.  So, I've accepted that it is out of my control, and I'm thankful that, above all, God cares about my heart!  :)

And, not to attack, but I've honestly wondered why JWs don't celebrate the Sabbath.... only out of curiousity since I was raised as one, and it doesn't seem consistent with the rest of their teachings.   I guess I'll ask my mom next time I see her.

Oh, and another curiousity.... Why do they call it a "talk" instead of "sermon" when they know that Jesus gave the SERMON on the mount.  Just curiousity, not an attack... but they always assume the worst of me any way.... oh well!

Sorry, Rutch. That was a "sweeping" statement. However, my point was I'm literally scared to ask a harmless question on this forum because of the frequent accusations from many, but not all, the JWs on this site.  If I ask a simple question, then all I hear is that I'm "grasping at straws."  I'm burnt out  on all of that.  But thank you for answering my question.  It's just that most Christians use the word "sermon" yet JWs seem to have an aversion to the word, which I do not understand.  It seems to me that it is part of seperating themselves from "Christendom" just as they do not use the word "church'' or other common terms.
