Why do some security guards make more than police officers?

I live in Tn, and a city called Lavergne treats their officers badly in terms of pay. They get 13.50$ to start. Thats crazy! I know of some security/protection jobs that start above that margin. Why would a city pay their officers such a low pay. In the metro division the officers start at like 17$.

That is the difference between State run organizations and private enterprise.

I live in TN. as well and i wish they paid that for a security officer in my area.

Im hoping to start at a university in the fall and i need a job like that............the places i applied to pay well under what you have quoted. But i know for a fact police officers in my city start at at least 15 an hour.

I guess it just depends on how wealthy the owner of the private security service is.
