Why do some smokers turn their cigarette boxes upside down and hit them with their hand?

I've seen several people do it. whats the point of it?

For a better mental picture:

You hold a box upside down in the palm of your upturned hand, and hit the top of it with the other hand.

Just curious if theres a purpose behind it, I'm baffled.

they do it to pack them. that way the tobacco gets packed together and it makes the cigerette burn better.

to pack it so that it stays in one place. my parents do that all the time.
