  1. Different species have different life strategies. Maples, for example, are "gap specialists" that grow quickly into the gap (clearing) left by a fallen tree. Beeches grow slowly, but they grow to win the battle for light, eventually shading out the maples. The maples have made many seeds by this time, and if the seeds are in a clearing left by a fallen beech, start the cycle over again.
