Why do sounds appear louder in the dark? Has anyone else noticed this?

...with the lights out, it seems there is a slight echoing effect. My roommate and I both noticed it.

  1. Well, when you think about it, one of your senses, Sight, would be cut off or at least impaired.  Hence it enhances your hearing slightly, making noises louder.

  3. What if it is programmed into us? As a defense mechanism. Night brought creatures in days past, now we are used to seamingly advanced hearing. But I like the sharpening senses theory too.

  4. i know what you mean, you can also feel this effect if you listen to a mp3 player during the night and you will notice you turn the volume down because it sounds louder.
