American colleges and Universities offer scholarships to atheletes.  Winning sports teams keep alumni happy and can bring big money from TV contracts so sports are very competitive between schools.  The education is sort of by product for the top atheletes, they are primarily there to gain experience and then turn professional in their sport when they graduate (or more and more often before ever graduating).
