  1. It looks good on you resume' for college or a job.


  2. Technically, they don't. They didn't have them when I was in high school!

    However, they are used to get students out into the community, doing something they might not otherwise. This also shows prospective colleges that the student cares about more than themselves, and it shows that (in theory) they care about more than good grades. It also shows a balance between work, school, and extra-curricular activities.

    Finally, it gets them out from behind game consoles and computers, and puts them in a non paycheck earning environment.

I believe that as us parents are getting busier and busier, we are neglecting to get our kids involved in our communities, which is what gives people a sense of belonging, or living in a place that feels like home. However it shouldn't be mandatory, this simply makes it feel like work. I think the schools have a good idea, but the wrong approach.

  4. Makes them a well-rounded, less selfish person
