Why do submarines have round doors?

  1. because of equal force of pressure on the hatch, and also f.y.i. all exterior hatches( the hatches that take you outside the sub.) all open outward toward the water to prevent anyone from opening the hatch while underwater because of the pressure on the hatch, unless the pressure is equalized or if the interior of the sub is filled with water, then you will get the hatch open, hope this helps

  2. I was stationed on subs for 8 years. In some subs, like 688s, internal hatches are oblong with rounded tops and bottoms.  In Tridents, they can be round. Exterior hatches are all round.

  3. so there are no nasty corners to bang yourself on

  4. Just easier to make watertight under extreme pressure

  5. First of all they are not doors. They are called hatches.  Round for the watertight integrity.

  6. to achieve optimum watertightness under extreme water pressure conditions.

  7. The same basic reason the windows and hatches on a jet airliner are rounded.  Pressure and strength.  All metals are stronger when there is an absence of sharp corners.

  8. because an "arch" is the strongest weight or pressure bearing design.

  9. so the water pressure is equal all around instead of in a corner like a square or rectangle door

  10. All pressure vesles have "round" or oval doors.

they are usually domed out in the direction of positive pressure. so that the pressure pushing on the door pushes equally all the way around on the seal.

    hope this helps.
