Why do surf-boards need to be waxed?

Surf boards need to be waxed because the performance requires it. I promise you, you won't be able to get up a steep wave if you don't wax your board.

Because, the salt water gets in the cracks and it makes them not last as long, and fade color, and ware out faster. waxing the surf board helps it get out some of the salt water and it makes it last longer.

Wax helps your feet get traction on the board.  If you didn't have wax, it's like stepping on wet glass.  You'll slip right off, unless it's a foam board.  Foam boards don't need any wax.

if u want to go more faster...wax will help....like a vegetable oil mix water and it wont mix....so image like in water and it will go fast with waxes

Like everyone is saying, it's to keep you from slipping off of the board, to make it easier to maneuver on it.
