  2. The water is NOT freezing.

    Competitive pools are maximized at 78 degrees (Yes this is colder than the normal 84-86 degrees most recreation pools are set too but it's not freezing)

    However, you're correct when you mention it's to acclimate to the temperature of the pool. Remember your body temperature is 98.6 so 78 is a shock to the body.

    If the starter would allow it most swimmers would rather be allowed to slip into the pool before their race but this is only allowed for the backstroke events.

  3. Believe it or not, the water they swimmers swim in is FREEZING!! It seems like the bigger the pool (the water cube is pretty much as big as they come...) the colder the water.

    By splashing yourself with water, you get a feel for the temp so your body isnt quite as shocked when you enter the water.

    Some swimmers prefer to dive in dry... others like to be wet. It could also be a habital action.
