Most of my (high school) teachers live very far away from the school, and they have to wake up extra early so they can arrive on time.

is it that all teachers must live a certain distance from the school?

  1. It is not a requirement to live far from the school, but some people are unwilling to relocate further from their current residency for a job they could still access without great difficulty. I myself work in Chicago, and have to wake up early to catch the train. Jobs are hard to come by these days, people will be willing to travel for them.

  2. No, there are usually no rules about where teachers must live, but there are a number of reasons why teachers may not live near their schools.  First of all, teachers may start at one school and be transferred to another while employed by a particular district.  If they don't want to keep moving around, they find a home in some area they like and stay there.  Secondly, some areas are too expensive for teachers to live in.  Thirdly, if the teacher is married, s/he may be living near the spouse's job (or between the spouse's job and her/his own).  Some teachers live in a neighborhood they grew up in, or near family members who may need help, rather than choosing where to live on their own.  Finally, if your school isn't all that good, teachers may choose to live in an areas with better schools for their own kids.

  3. Im a teacher and live about 7 mins away from the school, but I do know some teachers that live about an 1hr away from school.

  4. Teachers fill out a form with preferences of what type of school they want. Then schools with those positions and wants are found and guess what - they might not be close. It's just the way it goes.

Not many people are close to their work. My bosses travel almost an hour and a half each way for work

  5. They probably don't want to bump into you outside of their work.

  6. So they don't have to live near the students. It's bad enough to put up with some of them (Not ALL) in class. But the don't want or need to live near them.

  7. I think you are making a generalization. Where a teacher lives is their own personal decision. I have worked at a school that was across the street, an hour away, or about 15 minutes away. It just depends on the individual teacher's circumstance. Why do you care how far your teacher lives from the school?

  8. no.  maybe its just coincidental.

  9. Probably because there were no schools hiring near them. Currently my school is about 7 minutes away. I am moving to Texas in a month. I will probably have to commute about 30 - 40 minutes because all the schools near my new house are not hiring

  10. One of the teachers I work with live on the complete opposite side of town from the school.

She put it this way:  "There are some mornings when I just want to run to the grocery store with no makeup or bra to grab a paper.  I don't want one of my students to be the cashier on those mornings."

  11. There are no requirements regarding how far or close to school a teacher lives.  I prefer living far enough away where I can shop at a grocery store, go out to pick up my morning paper and frequent a fast food restaurant without running into one of my students.  Some teachers enjoy seeing their students outside of the school day.  I don't happen to be one of them.
