  1. Early exposure.  Even sorting is viewed as a mathematical activity.

  2. Play is the primary means of children's learning when they are at such a young age. A constructivist approach to teaching and learning mathematics, based on the works of Piaget, basically states that children make meaning and gain knowledge through their experiences.

By including games that explore mathematical concepts, educators give children the opportunity to explore and learn these concepts in a fun way!

  3. To help and lay the groundwork for mathematical thinking and understanding.

Sorting, patterns, classifying, comparing, and working on shapes are all good things to start doing with a preschooler, that isn't just your basic number recognition and counting out loud.

  4. Between the ages of 3-6, children are trying to make sense of their world around them and make sense of the order they have understood from the ages of birth - 3.  Math is one of those things children are excited about and thrive in.
