Okay, I'm a little confused, I've signed up with numerous agencies, over the past six months.I've signed up with a few staffing agencies in West L.A., Beverly Hills (didn't get sent out on a assignment), I also signed up with a few in Orange County, no call backs or presented to a client, today I get a call for a medical staffing firm in Los Angeles, and the staffing coordinator tells me that she has this front office postion, that she wants me to start on, and I get there and she tells me that she needs to verify my references/background, and actually get a hold of the client before she sends me out, it reallllllly depressed me, i started to question myself, is there something wrong with me? Am I not dressed right? Is my hair to ethnic" Am I overqualified? I have a B.S. and A.A. in Criminal Justice.. plus I have over 8 years of clerical/administrative experience? Can someone tell me the deal please?

  1. because people need the money enough to take the c**p, and they know it.

  2. It's true not all temp agencies are created equal..lol, more are unprofessional (though they expect the world from you) than they are professional.  From what your saying about your credentials you seem like a pretty descent candidate for Clerical/Admin jobs - but you could have tough competition.  Also look at the rate of pay your requesting, remember they will pay you an amount but charge more to an employer so they make money, and maybe what they are charging for you is to high.  I would call these places and ask them what is going on, if they have jobs, or if there is an issue w/pay or something else that might be holding you back from opportunities.  Are you looking only for temp jobs?  If you are you can do your own job search as well there are a lot of company that hire their own temps, sometimes they call them Contract Employment.  You may also want to look for a highering agency that places only Clerical/Admin people.  Have you tried Manpower Temp Agency - I work with them were I'm at and we get good service - I even found my first job in HR through them.

  4. Have you applied for any police departments?  I'm wondering why you got your degrees in criminal justice, but are applying for clerical jobs.  The clients may be wondering the same thing.

Also consider applying for the State, County or large City jobs in your area.  They frequently want a degree, but don't care what it's in for many of their positions.

Always look professional.  Dress appropriately for the job.  You mentioned your hair - are there others with hair similar to yours?  If not, change it.  Look like the people who are working where you want to in your appearance.

I have to say I was always treated well by temporary agencies, and I always signed on with at least two at a time.  I did any job I was offered, until I got my good reputation built up.  Then I could pick and choose what jobs I took.

Times are hard now, I wish you luck in finding a good job.

  5. I share the same experience - doesn't matter who or what you are, there are a lot of people registering for temp work and they don't have to treat you so nice.  I'm looking for alternatives.  wish you the best!
