Question:

Why do tennis announcers continually switch from looking at the camera to looking at the person next to them?

Example: Chris Fowler is a good tennis announcer, but when he's "on camera" he switches from looking at the camera to looking at his fellow commentator, and he does it continuously! Broadcasting 101 clearly states that an announcer should either speak to the camera (audience), or to the person next to him/her, and look at the one to whom you're speaking. Fowler would be perfect as a radio announcer.

  1. I dont know but maybe because its there job.

  2. I, for instance would look at players such as Ana Ivanovic and Maria Kirilenko and not at my fellow commentator:-)

  3. Most of them look at the person next to them when they are speaking to or listening to that person.    It makes sense to me.

  4. Interesting question...

You normally do face the person with whom you are in a conversation with...

But with a sports announcer, wouldn't it be necessary to look at the actual sporting event from time to time?  Perhaps that's actually what he's doing?  Maybe the camera is in the general direction of the Tennis court?

I wonder... do they have teleprompters for sports announcers?

I think sports announcers have it a little harder than scripted MC's.  They are, in effect, improvising the entire time.
