Why do tennis players make weird noises?

I was just watching tennis the other day, and after every time they hit the ball, they make a weird noise. If you close your eyes while having tennis playing on your tv, you would think you are watching a rated X movie. A noise which you do not want your kids to hear.

So why do most pro tennis players do this? I cannot understand.

  1. it's called "grunting" .. some tennis players grunt because it helps them to have more energy when hitting the ball. Some might get annoyed by those grunts but for my part, I don't think it's a big deal. Each player has their way to play, quietly or not =)

  2. when they hit the ball they use all there strength, and in doubles your supposed to be very vocal with your partner for stratigie and for safety reasons

if you hit it out you feel bad and just cant help say somethinging

  3. It's called a grunt! Your example is weird... Not all tennis players make the rated X movie sound either...

  4. Believe it or not. It gives you more power. Kind of like what power lifter does.

  5. Its a grunt .

  6. Well... When a player hits hard, he/she tends to exhale hard which produces sound. Usually, when they do they're backswing, they inhale air and hold it in until they hit the ball. It gives like, more power to the ball. And other times, people just get used to it. I play silently and when I get to hit power shots, I made a sound, though I didn't mean to. It really depends..

  7. It's natural, sometimes you can't help it, to get more power to reach and hit the ball.

  8. Players grunt when they play tennis the same reason fighters kiap when doing martial arts. Your natural instinct is to hold your breath before you hit something. Grunting when you hit the ball ensures that you exhale on contact and actually gives your shot additional power (consistently) and strangely enough, it also helps with your timing of the shot.

But a lot of players start grunting when they get exhausted or fatigued throughout the match. You can hear that with the Williams sisters and also Andy Roddick who are usually silent in the beginning of the match but then start grunting later in the match. I'm pretty sure I do the same thing.

Not all players grunt however (Roger Federer and Lindsay Davenport can play completely silent). For most players grunting is a habit that they aren't even concious of. They've most likely been taught that way since they first started so now it comes second nature.

  9. Because there tightening their stomachs so that they can hit the ball harder :)
