Why do the London Underground signs say 'Way Out' and not 'Exit'?

  1. Because London is in Britain and not the USA.

    Which is the same reason they call:

    - trucks "lorries"

    - wrenches "spanners"

    - car hoods "bonnets"

    - car trunks "boots"

    - bathrooms "WCs"

    - windshields "windscreens"

    - policemen "bobbies"

    - elevators "lifts"

    ... should I go on?

    US English and UK English are similar, but not identical, languages.

  3. Exit in the UK tends to refer more to Emergency Exits.

    Way Out is exactly what it says :)

  5. Back in the 70's it was originally called "This Is Way Out Man" but have since shortened it to just "Way Out" as those that originally named it have since lost most of their brain cells & two words are much easier to remember.
