Why do the Oakland A's have a black alternate uniform?

I don't understand why the A's have a black alternate uniform,it isn't a team color,so why do they have an unnecessary alternate uniform.I'll bet it's to sell more uniforms,or they're just wearing black to try and be as popular as the Giants are since the Giants are the more popular team in the Bay Area.

The alternate A's black jersey is in tribute to the United States Army. You will note that the white script "Athletics " on the front of the jersey is trimmed in gold. The color scheme is also reflected on the alternate cap that is worn with the black jersey.
