  1. The modern city of Nablus derived its name from a Roman town that was founded in 72 CE, which was close to the biblical city of Shechem. Originally the town was known as Flavia Neopolis, but it was eventually shortened into Nablus, after the Arab conquest in 636 CE.

The Hebrew name is derived from the word for “back” or “shoulder” - an apt description of Shechem's location in the narrow valley between Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal approximately 65 km North of Jerusalem. It was strategically located controlling major North-South and East-West roads, but lacked natural defenses and for that reason required.

Shechem was one of the oldest settlements in Canaan. The earliest written record comes from an inscription on the Stele of Khu-Sebek who was a noble in the court of Sesotris III

  2. Absorbing the answer to (what appears to be) a simple question is essential to understanding the history of this region.

Shay is correct. The Roman conquerers tried to change many of the Hebrew names of towns in an attempt to subjugate the Jews and obliterate Jewish culture in the land. Shchem, an important Samarian city mentioned in the Bible, was  renamed  "Flavia Neapolis" when it was conquered by the Romans.

Jump ahead to the Arab conquest of the city in 636. The Arabs kept the Roman name, but pronounced Neapolis as "Nablus" due to their inability to say the letter "p".  The city was later occupied by Crusaders in 1099 who altered the name slightly to  Naples. (The famous Italian city, Naples, is also derivative of the Roman "Neapolis".)

Dawn, people refer to the town as "Shchem" because that is its original name.

" . . . the territories of Judea and Samaria are the home Allah granted to the Jewish people, and that any attempt to steal them from their legitimate owners is a declaration of war against a Divine decree."
