    Only the word english before the word language should give them some clue!

  3. Not only the americans. We New Zealanders call it soccer too. Don't know why. We don't call anything else football. Rugby is rugby, league is league, and soccer is soccer.

The word soccer was created as a slang term for association football (football/soccer's official name) and credited to former English captain Charles Wreford-Brown.  In countries where association football is not the most popular sport it is often called soccer to separate it from American Football, Rugby Football (former official name), etc.
