Why do the austrian license plates have the letter A for Austria, instead of the Ö for Österreich? Other countries have there abbreviations in their own language, like the D for Deutschland or ES for España. So why not austria?

  1. HI the reason why it states A for Austria is because it has been translated from the latin word for "Österreich" which is Austria. There are also some other states where it is not necessarily the word in their own language like Switzerland (CH means Confoderatio Helvetica (lat) or  Hungary (H). Most of the license plates are in english and not in the mother language (Spain is an exemption).
