  1. It costs money... and if you have to sell the hotels back to the bank, you pay it at half price. I personally, only buy three houses per street. When I get really rich, then I buy more hotels and things.

  2. The players may avoid buying hotels to avoid others to force a housing shortage in the game.

If a player that has hotels on their property get into a money crunch.  There's a risk that there's not enough houses to allow the player to step down their developments & therefore that player would be forced to sell the hotel without having any houses there (1 hotel = 5 houses).  This also wrecks havoc with the even-building rule, which would force the player to tear down the other hotels to comply with that rule.

HOWEVER, some house rules may prevent the player from selling his hotel at all because there's not enough houses in the bank allow the player to evenly break down (per the even-building rule).  So if there's not enough houses in the bank, the hotel owners are pretty much screwed as a result.

It's ultimately a strategy in housing control.

  3. Think about street repairs.. If you have a bunch of hotels, and u get "street repairs" you'll go moneyless (bankrupt) immediately.

  4. It's a matter of timing and location.  If you build too quickly or on the cheaper properties, you have less cash flow and open yourself to the regressive risk of street repairs.
