I've always been told told: "DO NOT WATER WHEN THE SUN IS OUT!" IT'LL BURN YOUR GRASS" IT'S THE KISS OF DEATH!!" Yet, the best looking lawns in my area are all watered late in the afternoon when the sun is out and when it's hot. Am I missing something???

  1. Eddie,  I use to water my yard in Northern Florida in the LATE afternoon.  Usually after 3 or so.  Or Early in the Morning before 10.

Heat has nothing to do with it.  It is the sun on the grass that does the damage.  The Time you should be out in the sun  10am - 2 PM

  2. Watering when the sun's out is wasting water because a lot of the water evaporates before the lawn can use it.

Those lawns are so lush, most likely is because those people water all the time.  Way too much.

If you want your lawn to be that lush, prepare for a big-fat water bill, because that's what it takes.  If you want your lawn to look pretty good, mostly green (but maybe not so thick and lush), you only need a good deep watering once or twice a week.  Anything more is an ugly waste of our natural resources for a self-fulfilling/selfish purpose.

  3. It is absolutely true.    The best time to water the lawn is before 10:00 AM or after 6:00 PM, if you water your grass at noon then it will only get burn because water acts like a mirror and water evaporates very fast.   2 or 3 times a week works better than daily and superficial watering.

If you want to have an extra green grass then fertilize it with sulfate of ammonia every 6 months.

  4. Old wive's tale. They burn up from not enough water. It's not the water in the sun that burns them up. It's not enough water when watering that gives the impression that it was the watering that caused the burn.
