I have lost electricity in 2 rooms, but the breakers appear to be OK. Is there anything else I should check before I call electrician. This way I don't sound like a thorough idiot when I call him...

Thanks!!!!

  1. That's the advantage of technology of the circuit breakers over the old fashioned fuses. You just reset them when they trip. To reset a breaker, push its pole to OFF position and then pull it back to ON position. If it trips again after turning ON the breaker it means there is a problem with the circuit itself, maybe a short-circuit or over-loading. For an over-loading, simply turn OFF and unplug the things that are connected to the circuit, and if the circuit breaker did not trip after turning it ON it means it's just case of over-loading. For a case of short-circuit, each time you turn ON the breaker, it immediately trips.

  2. Go and push the breakers all the way off so they will reset themselves,,then you should feel a little resistance as you push the breakers on,,,You need to ascertain what is causing them to pop off to begin with,,only two things do that ,,a short within in the house wiring or in something that was plugged in or you are overloading the circuitry in each room with to much plugged in,,a regular room is usually only a 15 or 20 amp breaker...

  3. Test and reset all of the GFCI outlets in the home, after you have turned off and then turned back on each circuit breaker. Shut down your computer first. You will need to reprogram the TV, VCR and Microwave.

  4. move the breaker swithes back and forth and they should re set.

  5. If a circuit is overloaded or shorts, the breaker will trip and cut power to prevent fire and possible electrocution. Follow these steps to turn the power back on.

Turn off the light switches and unplug appliances in all rooms that have lost power.

Find your circuit breaker box and open the cover.

Locate the tripped breaker. Circuit breakers are small, usually horizontal switches and can be labeled by the areas of the house they serve (e.g., "kitchen," "bathroom" etc.). The tripped circuit breaker will be in the "off" position or in a middle position between "on" and "off."

Reset the breaker by moving it to the full "off" position and then back to "on." That should clear an overload and return power to the room. If the breaker re-trips, you may have too many lamps and appliances plugged into the circuit; a damaged cord or plug; a short circuit in a receptacle, switch or fixture; or faulty wiring.

Identify and fix what had been causing any problems before finally resetting the breaker.

If, you live in a multi-plex building be sure the wiring is not crossed with another unit.

  6. It's the wrong breakers or you did not flip it all the way off ,and then back on again.
