Why do the dominican republic people where devils mask?

They where devil mask during Carnaval (February) the most important one is the one in La Vega (near Santiago)

It all part of a pagan believe that is trying to dress as demons to confuse the evil spirits / “suppose” real demons from not hunting you and instead they would think you are one of them. This believe was celebrated around the same time the country celebrated our independence day which is February 27 so it got incorporated into our festivities and made it all one big “Carnaval”.
