My brother claims sickness benefit because he is an alcoholic and cant work-pfffftt! He's 32 yrs old and yes he has a problem with alcohol, but he can still get out of bed in the morning and ride his bike or walk to his equally workshy mates houses, go on a binge and somedays even do some paid 'work-on-the-side'. To qualify for sickness benefit he has to see a doctor, I think every 6 months, to assess his need to claim benefit - and he passes with flying colours everytime! Since leaving school at 16 he has never had a job. He now claims benefit for his girlfriend who is mentally ill so he now gets carers allowance and their 1 yr old daughter - his girlfriend is also 7 months pregnant again. He is quite capable of working, and Im sure there are people who have a drink problem who are able to function enough to hold down a job, because they have to pay mortgage and bills. For some people alcoholism is a serious disease that leaves them unable to work and these people do need help, but too many people are able to cheat the system. Its really gets my blood boiling that my husband and I work our arses off to provide for our kids, we're not entitled to any benefits other than the 'child benefit' yet we have to subsidise all these cheaters and their offspring claiming their too ill to go out to work. Does anyone know what checks the government does to weedle out people like this? Obviously, the doctors have to work to guidelines whilst doing their health checks, but how thorough are they????
