Why do the hemispheres of the brain control the body's opposite side?

  1. because efferent neurons (pyramidal tract) arising from motor cortex cross to opposite side either in medulla oblongata i.e. brain stem (80%) or at spinal cord entry level(10%). Remaining 10% remain uncrossed. As a result, right motor cortex controls left half of body and vice versa.

The organization of the brain is rather complex, especially the eyes.  The lens of the human eye inverts images vertically and horizontally, forming an unavoidable natural cross-over.  Therefore, to interpret images the left and right brain must sort things out.  If the brain can sort out left and right images it is a small step to sort out crossed-over signals from the limbs, etc.  Either the cross-over features of the human nervous system have survival value or at least pose no special disadvantage.
