Why do the highest tides occur during full moon and new moons?

  1. At the new and full moon the tidal forces on the Earth from both the sun and moon act in the same direction, because the sun, moon, and Earth are all aligned.

  2. I may be wrong, but here it is

    I read somewhere and it goes something like this....

    The moon has it's own force on the water, which is too smal for us to feel, but enough to "lift up" the water a little. This results in high waves, specially when the moon full.

  3. this is b'coz of the force of gravity exerted by moon on earth...........on regular days normal tides occur....but on full moon n new moon sun exerts the max. force
