  1. This is a field hockey question. And they wet the field because the ball is supposed to be easier to hit and move  when the field is a little wet.

  2. A "pitch" refers to the playing ground, or surface; our American friends might use the term "field".

Artificial pitches are watered so the ball will move easier.

  3. There are no pitches in hockey.  In baseball, yes.  In football, you can say that a quarterback tossing a lateral to a player could be said to be "pitching" the ball.  In basketball, there was a great early player named Paul Arizin whose passing earned him the nickname Pitchin' Paul.  But there are no pitches in hockey.
