Question:

Why do the instructions say I can't use a dimmer w/ my new light fixture?

I just bought a lighted pot rack from Lowe's (Portfolio brand). When I read the instructions before installing the fixture, it says "Do not install on dimming circuit". There is already a dimmer switch going to that ceiling box from the old fixture. Why would I not be able to use the dimmer for this particular light? It takes 2 50-watt mini floodlight bulbs. Thank you

  1. The reason WHY is not important. What's important is that you follow the instructions provided by the Manufacturer of the fixture. The Installation & Use Instructions are part of a product's listing. Using any electrical product contrary to its intended end use is a MAJOR Code violation, and probably the #1 reason for electrical fires.

Any type of electric discharge light fixture requires dimmable ballasts in order to be controlled by a dimmer. If the Manufacturer believed this fixture could be used successfully one a dimmer control, they would have had it evaluated for such use.

  2. The only reason I could think of is if the bulbs are fluorescent.  You can't use a dimmer with fluorescent bulbs.

  3. You ask why, not for a detailed code explanation.  Are these 50 watt floodlight bulbs low voltage?  If so that would mean there is a transformer involved and a dimmer wouldn't work well in that situation.  As somebody else said, if they are fluorescent bulbs it takes a special dimmer and ballast to dim them.  I would suggest just changing the dimmer switch out for a standard toggle switch.
